“In April 2025 Captain Nichola Goddard School CBE was lucky enough to have Evan Rothery join us for a month to work with our grade 6 students on a percussion project. One of the main outcomes of our grade 6 music program is building a sense of rhythm and beat with a focus on sound over sight. Evan provided us with an engaging and energetic program that did just this. Simulating that of a video game, Evan gained the buy in of our students to teach them about percussive sounds, drumming patterns, and teaching them counting without them realizing. After the students were involved in the play of the program he introduced the patterns in more depth and allowed students to explore the sounds and rhythms in their own sphere. He did this all with minimal materials! All students needed was cardboard, two dowel sticks, and two balloons. These materials were able to bring the sounds of a drumkit alive for each student and I am so grateful for the experience. In the future I will not hesitate to reach out to Evan again to come work with our students.

Evan Rothery’s balloon drumming sessions filled our classroom with energy, focus, and creativity. Through his ever-evolving approach—beatmapping, jamming exercises, and rhythm exploration—he captured every student’s attention. I would love to see future residencies expand into activities like his famous sound sandwiches and sound spectrum listening, alongside his inventive percussion work. Evan has so much more to offer, and I’d gladly bring him back for a longer program.
